How to protect your home when you aren't around
When you're leaving your home empty, it's not strange if the worry about burglary pops into your mind. Burglars take their chances when they notice that a house is empty, leaving the owner to come home to a disaster. If you're going out of town, and you don't have anyone to guard your house for you, there are a few things you should consider doing in order to prevent intruders from robbing you while you aren't even there.
Use a security system
There are plenty of security systems specifically made to protect your home when you're not around. You should consider looking into motion-detecting lighting that only turns on if someone goes near it. This gives an illusion that the intruder is being watched and might be enough to deter them from burglary. Another effective security system is security cameras with software that allows you to control them through your phone or tablet, which means that you can keep an eye on your property wherever you are. This, in combination with classic alarms that go off if someone tries to break in, creates massive complications for anybody that is trying to get into your home when you're not around.
Fool the burglar
To prevent your security system to even be put to the test, however, there are a few things you can do to fool the burglar that you are actually home even when you're not. Consider getting a timer to turn your TV and radio on for a little while each day you're gone, as this creates an illusion that someone is in the house. For the same reason you should also consider getting a timer that opens and closes you curtains so that they're different at different times of the day. If you have a home phone, you should get it reconnected to your cell phone, as some burglars try to call the home phone before the burglary to make sure that nobody's home.
Form habits
Form habits when you're at home that make it less obvious when you aren't at home. Always park your car in the garage and shut the door behind it. This makes it seem less suspicious when you're away and there's no car in the driveway. You should also remember to turn your motion activated lighting off periodically when you are at home. If someone is watching you when you walk to your house and notice that the light turns on every time, this is an indicator that the light is automatic and therefore makes it less of a scare tactic for burglars that are trying to get into your home.
